The San Antonio Riverwalk, or Paseo del Rio in Spanish, is a network of walkways along the banks of the placed San Antonio River. This tourist area is an important part of the city’s urban fabric. It winds and loops under bridges and is lined with wonderful restaurants, boutiques and shops plus fine hotels. It also connects the major tourist attractions like the Alamo, the San Antonio Museum of Art and the Pearl Brewery. Along with the many other Texas-sized attractions that await us, this trip is sure to please anyone escaping the final phase of a Wisconsin winter.

 

Day 1

Depart the icy winds of Wisconsin for the warm western breezes of Texas. Today we meet our fellow passengers as we make our way south into Illinois and our first overnight destination of St. Louis, Missouri. Our accommodations will be at the Drury Inn.

Day 2

After a hot, hearty breakfast we’re on the road again, passing through the foothills of the Ozarks as we motor through Missouri. We’ll pause for lunch just before passing into Oklahoma and rest our heads at the Hyatt Place Bricktown in Oklahoma City.

Day 3

Depart for Cow Town or better known as Fort Worth, TX this morning. The Old West comes to life before your eyes during the worlds only cattle drive. Real Texas cowhands drive a herd of Texas longhorns down Exchange Avenue everyday in the Stockyards National Historic District. Time for shopping in this historic area of the city before enjoying lunch at the famous Cattleman's Restaurant. Then we're off to the Dallas to tour downtown, view the Sixth Floor Book Depository, and see the "grassy knoll", and learn the legacy of President John F. Kennedy. Tonight, we will pause for our overnight in the city of Austin, famous for its music and welcoming hospitality. We are hosted by the Drury Inn.

Day 4

Today we head for the hills just outside of San Antonio. With 200 shops and stores, Fredericksburg offers a boundless array of the fresh, the quaint, the one-of-a-kind that you won't find any place else. Antiques and art.Handiwork and home decor. We’ve also come here for a visit to The National Museum of the Pacific War dedicated to perpetuating the memory of the Pacific Theater of WWII. The beautiful courtyard is ringed by handsome old limestone walls that hold plaques honoring the contributions of individuals, ships and units during the war in the Pacific. The Plaza of Presidents is a striking outdoor tribute to the ten American presidents who serve in the armed forces during WWII. It’s just a short drive to our destination of the San Antonio Riverwalk and our accommodations for four nights at the Drury Inn & Suites.

Day 5

There are lots of things to see and do in San Antonio and very nearby. Today we get our bearings as a local guide gives us fact and folklore here in San Antonio. A stop at the Alamo Historic Site is a must. Originally named Mission San Antonio de Valero its best known as the site of an heroic battle to defend it against the forces of the invading Mexican army lead by General Santa Anna. Later tour the elegant three-story Edward Steves Mansion located in the King William Historic District on the east bank of the San Antonio River. Built in 1876 for the founder of the Steves Lumber Company it is an ashlar limestone structure which features a concave mansard roof with decorative iron cresting characteristic of the French Second Empire and the Italian Villa styles. Lunch is located right in the heart of downtown at a restaurant with fantastic food and spectacular wildlife exhibits. The Institute of Texas Cultures is a Smithsonian Affiliate. You will experience the cultures and stories of people around the globe that now call Texas home. Finish the day at the top of the Tower of the America’s for a great view of San Antonio.

Day 6

Today a local historian joins us for a comprehensive tour of several local missions including the Mission Concepcion and the Mission San Jose. After enjoy free time at the El Mercado Historic Market Square for great souvenir shopping and lunch this afternoon finds us touring the nationally known shoe company SAS to learn more about this successful company. The evening is yours to explore the many restaurants and other fun spots on the Riverwalk.

Day 7

Today we head to the German influenced nearby town of New Braunfels (which means Brown Rock in English.) Established in 1845 by the German Prince, Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Commissioner General of the "Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas." We will enjoy a locally guided tour to learn more about this interesting settlement. It's home to Texas' oldest dancehall - Gruene Hall, it's oldest bakery - Naeglin's Bakery, and the 10-day salute to sausage known as Wurstfest which is held annually. Great ethnic eateries and other curiosities await. After our tour, have lunch at one of these local eateries then some shopping in the quaint downtown area before heading back to San Antonio.

Day 8

So quickly comes our time to pack up and depart San Antonio. We retrace our steps eastward bound this time, making a quick lunch stop at quirky and popular TV renovation program’s Magnolia Silo’s in Waco, TX. Oklahoma City will be our overnight destination at the Hyatt Place Bricktown.

Day 9

We head across the plains of Oklahoma and are soon crossing into the Show Me State of Missouri. We’ll pause for a relaxing and giddy lunch experience at Lambert’s Home of the Throwed Rolls in the little town of Ozark. Tonight is our final overnight at the Drury Inn, in Collinsville, IL

Day 10

Time to say so long to old and new friends today as we are homeward bound after a great winter break in Texas.
