The most awe-inspiring site in the desert southwest is the spectacular Grand Canyon. Its steep walls were created by erosion, wind and the Colorado River through the millennia.

Other parks on our journey captivate our senses with multicolored mountains, spectacular rock formations and sheer spires found nowhere else in the world.

Day 1

Join Lamers Tour & Travel as we travel to the great southwest to view several of our most spectacular national parks in the country. Tonight, enjoy the ambiance of the Drury Inn & Suites in Des Moines, IA.

Day 2

Our westward journey continues into the Great Plains of the United States. We pause for a visit at Father Flanagan’s Girls & Boys Town in Omaha. A campus guide will join us for our visit explaining the purpose and mission of Boys Town. See Dowd Chapel, Hall of History and the Father Flanagan House. We continue across Nebraska, headed for Ogallala and our overnight accommodations at the AmericInn & Suites.

Day 3

The flat prairie scenery begins to disappear today as we head into the Rocky Mountain region and Colorado. After an unforgettable day of scenery relax for the evening Grand Junction as guests of the Drury Inn & Suites.

Day 4

Today we arrive and view our first park, Arches National Park in Utah. Extraordinary features of the park create a landscape of contrasting colors and textures unlike any other in the world while preserving over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The forces of nature have revealed millions of years of geological history. We will stay on the edge of Bryce Canyon with time to enjoy the beautiful night sky and delightful Ruby’s Inn.

Day 5

Bryce Canyon is famous for its red rock spires and horseshoe shaped amphitheaters. Enjoy the spectacular scenery as we head to nearby Zion National Park. Here massive canyon walls ascend to azure blue skies. The towering cliffs range in color from pink to cream to red. They are often described as sand castles crowning desert canyons. Arrive in Page, AZ later today and spend the next two nights at the Holiday Inn.

Day 6

Today, we take time to visit Mother Nature’s showstopper, the Grand Canyon. Carved by the Colorado River, the Grand Canyon is considered to be one of the major wonders of the world. We will travel along the South Rim making several stops for pictures. Marvel at the brightly colored Painted Desert as we make our way to the Historic Cameron Trading Post before heading back to our hotel.

Day 7

We enjoy a change of pace today as we partake of a relaxing float trip on the clear waters of The Colorado River. Nature surrounds us with dramatic red rocks, secluded coves and rosy beaches. Our overnight will be in Kayenta, AZ, part of the Navajo Nation at the Hampton Inn & Suites.

Day 8

This morning, we board special vehicles to view the sheer spires of Monument Valley. The area is noted for its vast and iconic sandstone buttes and other amazing formations. Later we will stop at Four Corners Monument, the only point in the United States where four states meet. The Holiday Inn Express is our host for the evening.

Day 9

Mesa Verde Spanish for "green table" offers a spectacular look into the lives of the Pueblo people who lived here for more than 700 years. View the unusual cliff dwellings, some of the most notable and well preserved in the United States. We will enjoy a special Mesa Verde Heritage Feast before heading to Durango, CO for our overnight stay and the Hampton Inn.

Day 10

After crossing the Continental Divide today, we take a scenic ride through the rugged San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Constructed to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, passengers soon realized it was the scenery that was special. The train has operated continuously for more than 125 years. Our overnight will be in Alamosa, CO at the Holiday Inn Express.

Day 11

Dodge City, once known as the "wickedest city in the west" and its famous Boot Hill are on the agenda for today. We overnight in Salina, KS located in the great open plains of the state. Enjoy the Hampton Inn this evening.

Day 12

Today we head for Abilene, KS, the hometown of Dwight D. Eisenhower, and visit his Presidential Library & Museum. Tonight, we return to Des Moines, IA for our last night out again at the Drury Inn & Suites.

Day 13

As the terrain begins to look more familiar, we return to our homes with memories to share about the awesome and inspiring Grand Canyon and Southwest Parks.
