Tour P. Allen Smith's Moss Mountain Farm
This tour pays homage to P. Allen Smith of PBS gardening fame. Be inspired as you tour his beautiful three-story Greek Revival-style home and learn about P. Allen’s authentic design approach. Explore Arkansas’ beautiful hills overlooking the Arkansas River as you wander the Terrace Garden, the Hidden Rose Garden, Hydrangea Allée, and his one-acre Vegetable Garden. Then sit down to a farm-to-table luncheon featuring a seasonal recipe from P. Allen Smith’s book.
Day 1
This tour is for all those gardeners out there or just those who enjoy a lovingly cared-for patch. Everyone's favorite PBS lifestyle expert and gardener of course, is P. Allen Smith. Many may have seen his Moss Mountain Farm in Arkansas come to life as he shared the building of home on his series. We're heading to not just Moss Mountain Farm on this tour, but to many other amazing gardens as we make our way southbound. Our first visit will be pretty close to home at Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, IL. Experience a twelve-acre landscape of streams, waterfalls, winding pathways, and koi-filled ponds rated one of North America's highest quality Japanese gardens. We stop for lunch before leaving the city and finish the day in the St. Louis, MO area at a Drury Inn.
BDay 2
Before departing the St. Louis area, we pause at the amazing Missouri Botanical Gardens. Sit back and enjoy the beauty of one of the oldest botanical gardens in the country during your private tram tour. During your visit rest your feet at the onsite Sassafras Café for lunch. Tonight, we rest our heads at the Holiday Inn in the Blytheville, AR area.
B, LDay 3
Today we round the highway into the little town of Scott, AR with our first stop at Marlsgate Plantation. Step into the living history and legacy that began in 1850 with the creation of this mansion. Located in the Arkansas Delta experience the plantation culture of the nineteenth century with a tour & luncheon.
BDay 4
Board the coach for the short drive to Roland, AR and where P. Allen Smith’s Moss Mountain Farm is located. Enjoy a tour through P. Allen Smith’s three-story Greek Revival-style home and learn about Smith’s authentic design approach that pays homage to the history of the farm. Wander the beautiful countryside overlooking the Arkansas River while touring Allen’s Terrace Garden, the Hidden Rose Garden, Hydrangea Allée, and his one-acre vegetable garden. Then connect to the land as you sit down to a farm-to-table lunch featuring a recipe from P. Allen Smith’s book, Seasonal Recipes from the Garden. For dessert, enjoy a slice of Allen’s famous buttermilk pecan pie with homemade whipped cream. Last but certainly not least, take a visit to Poultryville to meet the chickens and other animals. Learn about Allen’s effort to conserve America’s early poultry breeds and why he started the Heritage Poultry Conservancy. Be sure to say ‘hi’ to your favorite farm animals from Allen’s television show—Trudy, Moose, Smudge & Squeak! Tonight, finds us at the Drury Inn & Suites, in Poplar Bluff, MO.
B, LDay 5
We’re on the road this morning making our way back towards Wisconsin. Stopping in the town of Mahomet, IL to visit Mabery Gelvin Botanical Gardens. Located in the Lake of the Woods Preserve, the garden boasts some of the most beautiful and diverse flora in East Central Illinois. Many couples have exchanged their wedding vows in this colorful setting. The garden has evolved over a period of years from a small garden to the eight acres it covers today. Our final overnight will be at the Drury Inn & Suites, Champaign, IL. Enjoy complimentary cocktails and manager’s kickback reception.
BDay 6
After a full tour of wonderful gardens, waterfalls, and great inspiration for our own homes, we’re on the last stretch of the trip. We pause for a farewell luncheon as we round the Chicagoland area and return home with great ideas for summer plantings.
