Shipshewana Flea & Amish Indiana

Join Lamers on this short outing to the Amish community of Shipshewana, Indiana. Learn details of their historic beginnings and way of life along with a shopping stop at the Shipshewana Flea, the largest flea market in the Midwest! Local tours, great dining and live performance of The Music Man at the Round Barn Theatre are all on the agenda.

Day 1
Return with us to a simpler time as you witness the clippity-clop of horse’s hoofs as resident Amish go about their daily lives. Travels take us southbound and as we round the Chicago metropolis and move into Indiana we’ll pause for a lunch break. We arrive in Shipshewana, IN for our first visit at the Menno-Hof Cultural Center. Here is a superb way to learn about Anabaptist principles, the beginnings (and persecution) of the Amish, Hutterites and Mennonites nearly 500 years ago, and how they made their way to America. Our accommodations for the next two nights will be at Staybridge Inn & Suites.
Day 2
Our Amish education continues as a local guide joins our group for a driving tour of the surrounding Amish countryside, farms and shops. Tonight, we travel to Nappanee, IN for dinner and live show at the newly renovated Barns of Nappanee. Prior to dinner, enjoy a self-guided tour of the resident Amish farm located here. Learn about their lifestyle as you wander the various buildings including a church, smokehouse, kitchen and gardens. Tonight we see the opening performance of The Music Man.
B, DDay 3
Today is the big day! The Shipshewana Flea Market is the largest flea market in the Midwest with almost 700 vendors covering 40 acres. Flea market vendors offer a variety of products from food to furniture. Shop wisely since what you buy has to fit in the bus! We’ll return to the hotel following your time at the market to drop packages and relax for a bit. We end with a great farm-style meal back at the Blue Gate with time for some last minute souvenir shopping. With our usual stretch breaks we make our way homeward bound. An early evening return time is expected.
