Travel to Harpers Ferry and Winchester, West Virginia to view historic farms and lush Allegheny Mountain scenery while onboard the Potomac Eagle and Western Maryland Railroad. Winchester is the childhood home of Patsy Cline and where she had big dreams of becoming a country music singer. Learn about her music career plus visit her childhood home to see her humble beginnings.
Day 1
Hit the road traveling to the back country of the great state of West Virginia. Home to Patsy Cline, she's considered one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century. Patsy was one of the first country music artists to successfully cross over into pop music. Tonight finds us at our hotel in the Toledo, OH area.
Day 2
Immortalized in song and history, Harpers Ferry National Park has several parallels in American drama. Among many of firsts, Harpers Ferry witnesses the arrival of the first successful American railroad, the largest surrender of Union troops in the Civil War and John Brown's attack on slavery. The park is located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers in the states of West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland. Stroll the picturesque streets and visit exhibits and museums to learn more about this historic part of the U.S. We will spend two nights in Winchester, WV.
B, DDay 3
Patsy Cline resided in Winchester, VA longer than at any other house associated with her and she returned to it intermittently until her singing career began in 1957. This morning we visit her historic home which serves as a proud testament to Patsy's love of family. Her devoted and influential relationship with her mother and their drive and determination launched Patsy's career. Following the home tour, a local guide will board the coach for a tour of Patsy's hometown. Enjoy more of this very rural location with a rail excursion on board the Potomac Eagle. A narrated three-hour excursion through the tranquil mountain valley of West Virginia. Around every curve you are rewarded with the splendor of native wildflowers, evergreens and mixed hardwoods in unspoiled countryside. Don't be surprised if you see bald eagles swooping overhead across the mountain skies! Tonight, we experience the 1924 vintage colonial revival architecture of the George Washington Hotel. Throughout its almost 100 years, it has hosted many celebrities including Lucille Ball and other famous Apple Blossom Festival queens! Betty Crocker held an apple pie baking contest in one of the ballrooms! Tonight, sit back and enjoy the soothing reminder of a past era as a Tribute to Patsy Cline celebrates Winchester's most famous daughter.
B, L, DDay 4
Today we check out of our hotel and head to the Cumberland Depot for an excursion on the Western Maryland Scenic Railway. Climb through the spectacular scenery of the Allegheny Mountains as the onboard narrator regales us with information about the scenery, history and culture along the way. Once in the town of Frostburg, watch as they unhook the engine and turn it on the huge turntable to be able to take the train back down the mountain. While in Frostburg, enjoy strolling the Main Street and its shops and eateries that line it. Our motor coach is waiting for us afterward and we motor our way back to the Toledo, Oh area for our final overnight at the Fairfield Inn.
Day 5
It's time to return home but with great memories of a simpler time in history. We hope you enjoyed your tour!
