Looking for a unique tour? Solomons Castle is it!
This is one of the most unique, must see, hand-crafted homes in Florida, a three-story, medieval-styled castle. In 1972, Howard Solomon discovered the land he purchased, sight unseen, was actually a swamp so he did what anyone would do, he built a castle instead! Into repurposing, he constructed the castle from shiny aluminum printing plates. The castle served as a living gallery for over 300 of his art pieces which carried a pun or joke, making the art both visually and intellectually engaging.
The castle is Solomons legacy. He is remembered as a visionary artist who turned trash into treasure, leading the movement of repurposing recycled and reclaimed materials into art. His creative mind soared from the young age of four until his death in 2016. His daughter Alane says her father has been called the Rembrandt of reclamation, the Da Vinci of debris, and Wizard of odds and ends. Solomon was a genius at turning junk into art. He never stopped creating!
Solomons Boat in the Moat restaurant next door serves up delicious home-style meals. Lunch selections are chosen from the Knights Round Table menu and lunch is scheduled prior to the afternoon castle tour.
