Lighthouse & Legacy
We begin the day with a brief morning break before continuing to Michigan City, Indiana, for a guided visit to the Barker Mansion. This beautifully preserved historic home offers a glimpse into early twentieth century life, featuring richly detailed rooms and original furnishings. Knowledgeable guides share stories of the Barker family, the Studebaker legacy, and the region’s history, making the visit both elegant and engaging.
Following the mansion tour, we enjoy an included buffet lunch at Zorn Brew Works. The menu features pulled pork BBQ sandwiches, the Zorn Burger, pasta salad, assorted kettle chips, and a selection of cookies and brownies.
In the afternoon, activities are divided into two experiences to accommodate capacity limits, with groups switching partway through. One group will visit the Old Lighthouse Museum, which showcases Michigan City’s maritime heritage through exhibits, artifacts, and stories tied to Lake Michigan and the working harbor. The experience includes climbing the lighthouse’s narrow spiral staircase, which leads to an elevated viewing area with scenic views of the lake, harbor, and surrounding shoreline
The second group will have free time at Washington Park Beach and the East Pierhead Lighthouse area. Guests may walk out along the pier toward the lighthouse, relax on the beach, or enjoy the lakeside scenery at their own pace. Please note that the interior of the East Pierhead Lighthouse is closed to the public, so the walk offers scenic lake and shoreline views, photo opportunities, and the experience of being out on the pier.
Please Note: The walk to the East Pierhead Lighthouse is approximately 0.35 miles each way along a flat but exposed pier, with no shade or seating, and takes about 10 to 15 minutes one way at a comfortable pace. The Old Lighthouse Museum does not have an elevator, and includes stairs, narrow passages, and uneven interior surfaces.
